The U.S. Department of Treasury and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) just announced that railroad retirement and social security recipients —who did not file a 2018 or 2019 tax return and who have qualifying children— must use the IRS Non-Filer tool by Wednesday, April 22nd in order to receive the $500 per eligible child added to their regular, automatic $1,200 stimulus (or economic impact) payments.
People who receive federal benefits like Social Security retirement, disability (SSDI) or survivor benefits and who have a dependent child or children should go to the IRS website and input their basic information before the deadline of Wednesday, April 22nd.
If they do not, they will only receive a payment of $1,200 – the remaining $500 per child will not be paid to them until the return filing for tax year 2020.
Individuals who use the IRS Non-Filer tool will have to provide basic information to determine their eligibility, such as:
It is important to note that veterans and SSI, or Supplemental Security Income, recipients have until a later date (which the IRS has not yet announced) to provide their information through the agency’s web tool.
If you are a SSDI or railroad retirement recipient with qualifying children who has not yet used the IRS Non-Filer tool, please visit this site and select the “Enter your information” option to update information immediately.
