Urgent Update On Stimulus Payments For Social Security Recipients
April 21, 2020
The U.S. Department of Treasury and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) just announced that railroad retirement and social security recipients —who did not file a 2018 or 2019 tax return and who have qualifying children— must use the IRS Non-Filer tool by Wednesday, April 22nd in order to receive the $500 per eligible child added to their regular, automatic $1,200 stimulus (or economic impact) payments.
People who receive federal benefits like Social Security retirement, disability (SSDI) or survivor benefits and who have a dependent child or children should go to the IRS website and input their basic information before the deadline of Wednesday, April 22nd.
If they do not, they will only receive a payment of $1,200 – the remaining $500 per child will not be paid to them until the return filing for tax year 2020.
Individuals who use the IRS Non-Filer tool will have to provide basic information to determine their eligibility, such as:
- Full names and Social Security numbers for applicant, spouse, and dependent(s),
- Mailing address,
- Bank account type as well as account and routing numbers (people who access their benefits through Direct Express do not have to enter this information)
It is important to note that veterans and SSI, or Supplemental Security Income, recipients have until a later date (which the IRS has not yet announced) to provide their information through the agency’s web tool.

If you are a SSDI or railroad retirement recipient with qualifying children who has not yet used the IRS Non-Filer tool, please visit https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/non-filers-enter-payment-info-here and select the “Enter your information” option to update information immediately.
