The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently announced an expanded recall of more than one million printer power supply units that Zebra Technologies imports and distributes through the United States. So far, there have been 30 reports of the power supply units overheating or starting fires, which results from a dangerous and potentially deadly product defect.
In at least one report, a defective power supply unit caught fire and spread to the surrounding work area, causing damage. Luckily, no consumers have reported injuries so far.
The recall includes 1,370,000 thermal printer power supply units. Thermal printers use heat to print text and images onto paper. The recalled units are prone to corroding and breaking down over time as a consequence of being exposed to moisture. When the units degenerate, they create major fire hazards.
There are numerous models included in the CPSC’s expanded recall, and some of the units serve as power sources for not just Zebra printers, but other brands as well. The power supply units were available for individual sale and were also sold in accompaniment with Zebra (and other re-branded and co-branded) thermal printers. What Should You do if You own a Recalled Model?
If you discover you are in possession of a recalled Zebra Technologies power supply unit, immediately discontinue use to ensure not being exposed to fire hazards. Consumers are being advised to call Zebra Technologies in order to receive a replacement thermal printer power supply unit free of charge.
This is not the first time that the CPSC has had to recall power supply units imported by Zebra Technologies. In late 2016, the agency recalled over 150,000 units for a very similar reason.
