NTSB Reviews SEPTA Train Crash in Upper Darby

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is reviewing the SEPTA train crash that occurred on Tuesday morning in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania involving the Norristown High Speed Line. Around 12:15 am, the train, carrying 41 passengers and the train operator, crashed into an unoccupied train car at the 69^th Street Transportation Center. At least 32 individuals were injured, including the train operator. The NTSB will review video from both cars, conduct interviews with the dispatcher and operator, and assess the vehicles and SEPTA’s safety systems to determine the cause of the train crash, which may take a year. Although the train operator was screened for alcohol and drug use, the results are not yet available.

One passenger who filed a lawsuit against SEPTA claims that the train operator appeared “rushed” and was speeding during the run. It is alleged that the operator also missed stops along the route including the Gulph Mills stop. The 26-year-old passenger who sustained a concussion further claimed that before the last stop, the train appeared to be going too fast. The NTSB has not confirmed the claims.
