A spinal cord injury can be devastating and result in life-long disability. Paralysis, debilitating nerve pain, cognitive deficits, and mobility issues are common when the spinal cord is damaged. Victims of spinal cord injuries are often unable to work or live independently. A new study conducted by the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago is offering hope to those with total motor and sensory loss. Rush University is currently one of only six American medical centers studying the effects of a new therapy using 10 million AST-OPC1 cells.
Researchers in the SCiStar Phase 1/2a study have found that embryonic stem cells converted into AST-OPC1 cells that are normally found in the brain and spinal cord have restored function to damaged nerve cells. The study included six patients who were treated with 10 million AST-OPC1 cells. Five of the six patients have completed a six-month follow-up, and three of those six have also completed a nine month follow up. The results have shown that the patients receiving the 10 million AST-OPC1 therapy have improved function and regained the ability to move their arms, hands, and fingers that had been completely paralyzed following their injury.
Recovering partial or full use of the upper body, including arms, hands, and fingers can enable victims of spinal cord injuries to live independently and enjoy such freedoms as dressing and feeding themselves. With restored function of the upper extremities, spinal cord victims can increase their mobility when they are able to lift their body and maneuver a wheelchair or motor vehicle equipped with hand controls.
The researchers involved with the SCiStar Phase 1/2a study say they are planning to approach the Food and Drug Administration in mid-2017 to discuss plans to move forward with the clinical trials. As clinical trials advance, researchers expect to bring renewed hope to victims of spinal cord injury. Even a partial restoration of motor and sensory function can significantly improve the quality of life for those with total paralysis.
A spinal cord injury is one of the most serious and life-altering injuries that can happen. Victims of car accidents, sports injuries, and even seemingly minor accidents such as slip and falls can sever the spinal cord and suffer permanent paralysis, pain, loss of independence, and mobility issues. Philadelphia personal injury lawyers at Galfand Berger LLP are committed to helping victims of spinal cord injuries claim the justice and compensation they deserve.
