  • Philadelphia Personal Injury Lawyers: New Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Initiative

Philadelphia is the latest city to benefit from a national public safety initiative aimed at increasing pedestrian and bicycle safety. While the number of individuals walking, running and cycling continues to increase, so does the number of pedestrian accidents.  Almost 5,000 pedestrian fatalities take place annually in the United States, most in urban areas.

In 2012, thirty-one pedestrians were killed in Philadelphia which represented 29% of Philadelphia’s total traffic fatalities. In an effort to reduce this number of pedestrian fatalities, Philadelphia has joined the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Initiative with the community’s Pedestrian Safety Action Plan.

With the support of the NHTSA’s $250,000 grant initiative, Philadelphia will increase police visibility and ticketing at twenty high-crash locations during certain high risk hours. Other new safety strategies will include pedestrian safety education on the dangers of speeding and not yielding to pedestrian traffic and additional police training on pedestrian safety.  Philadelphia law enforcement plays a critical part in the success of these pedestrian and bicyclist safety initiatives.

Supporters of the national Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Initiative, including NHTSA Deputy Administrator David Friedman, believe that a comprehensive approach including both education and enforcement is needed to reduce pedestrian accidents. The NHTSA initiative focuses on infrastructure safety, public education, vehicle safety and collection of accident data. Research has shown that education and stricter law enforcement of safety laws are key components to making communities safer for pedestrians and cyclists. Other states joining the NHTSA’s Pedestrian and Safety Initiative include New York and Kentucky.
