Our firm is proud to announce that Partner Farhan Ali was just appointed to serve as President of the Board for HIAS Pennsylvania. HIAS PA is one of the largest non-profit immigrant legal service providers in the state. Farhan is no stranger to HIAS PA’s mission; in fact, his personal experience as an immigrant as well as his history as a longtime member of the Board will undoubtedly afford him a unique and nuanced outlook as he embarks upon this new leadership role.
HIAS Pennsylvania stands for “Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society of Pennsylvania”. Though the organization was originally created to aid Jewish refugees, HIAS PA proudly serves individuals of all faiths and backgrounds. The non-profit’s mission is to support low-income immigrants from different walks of life as they build new lives in the United States. HIAS PA addresses immigrants’ needs by providing legal services, defending their rights, and advocating for their full and fair inclusion in American society.
From 2023 to 2024, HIAS Pennsylvania served over 6,300 clients from 138 countries, providing a total of 12,831 legal and social services. Here are just a few examples of the crucial supportive services that HIAS PA provides to those in need:
Farhan’s personal experience with immigration will only strengthen his position as HIAS PA’s Board President. Though he is an Indian citizen, Farhan was born and raised in Kuwait. After moving to the United States, Farhan earned his Juris Doctor from Temple University’s James E. Beasley School of Law, graduating from its prestigious Trial Advocacy Program with a Certificate in Trial Advocacy and Litigation.
Farhan’s Presidency also marks an extremely significant moment in the organization’s history: he is HIAS Pennsylvania’s first Muslim Board President. Members of the Board say they are looking forward to his Presidency because of his leadership, personal knowledge of the critical nature of HIAS Pennsylvania’s mission, and a passion for what the organization stands for and has become.
Since joining Galfand Berger in 2016, Farhan has fought tirelessly on behalf of those harmed in automobile collisions, premises liability, and construction site accidents. He has successfully guided numerous cases to verdicts in trials and arbitrations through tenacious and empathetic advocacy. Farhan has also been recognized as a Pennsylvania Rising Star every year since 2022 by the independent survey group, Super Lawyers. Only the top 2.5% of Pennsylvania attorneys, who are under 40-years-old or who have been practicing for ten years or less, receive the honor of the Rising Star award. Farhan has also been awarded the 2025 South Asian Bar Association Rising Star award which is awarded for early-career attorneys who have demonstrated a broad range of high achievement in their practice area, leadership, innovation, legal and community service, as well as a commitment to diversity and inclusion.
