Our firm was a proud attendee and sponsor of this year’s Golden Door Awards, an annual fundraiser that serves low-income immigrants as they build new lives across our community. Founded in 1882, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society’s (HIAS) primary mission has been to support low-income immigrants of all backgrounds by providing an array of immigration legal and social services that address their needs, defend their rights, and advocate for their equitable inclusion into American society.
Galfand Berger partners Michael Malvey, Farhan Ali, and Brooke Elmi attended the event. Farhan is also the Vice President on HIAS’ Board of Directors. This year’s event, “Welcoming Immigrants, Strengthening Our Communities”, took place on April 18th.
The Golden Door Awards honored three meritorious recipients: Rev. Zoe Cassell, St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, and Troutman Pepper Hamilton Sanders LLP. Rev. Cassell fled civil unrest alongside her then-infant son in Liberia. When she received her green card in the U.S., she dedicated herself to helping others in need. At Rev. Cassell’s church, which she herself started, she provides aid and support to low-income and homeless individuals in her community, many of which are immigrants. St. Mary’s Episcopal Church and its Immigration Action Group, or IAG, are advocates to many of HIAS’ clients and the larger immigrant community. For example, the IAG organizes drives to collect household goods and donations in addition to collaborating with other volunteer organizations to offer critical services to immigrants. HIAS is honoring Troutman Pepper for the outstanding pro bono services it has provided to low-income immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, as well as for hosting legal clinics and facilitating partnerships with other supportive corporate partners.
