  • Galfand Berger Supports Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Scholarship

The Philadelphia Bar Association (PBA) established the Workers’ Compensation Section in 1995 to address the specialized needs of lawyers practicing Workers’ Compensation law. The Section maintains several subcommittees, which provide attorneys with opportunities to learn, enhance their skills, and serve their communities. One of these subcommittees is the Diversity and Inclusion subcommittee. This year, our firm is supporting the subcommittee’s scholarship program, which selects a deserving law student to aid with their spring tuition.

Formed just 10 years ago, the Diversity and Inclusion subcommittee is tasked with the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the legal profession and to enhance opportunities for all attorneys. Per the Bar Association, the Diversity and Inclusion subcommittee educates the Workers’ Compensation Section on diversity and inclusion issues, develops strategies for the recruitment and retention of diverse individuals, and engages in community outreach in conjunction with the PBA’s other subcommittees.

Educating and empowering emerging law students is a significant part of the Diversity and Inclusion subcommittee’s mission, which involves mentorship and education through activities like shadowing and mock trial programs. The subcommittee will also be selecting one student to receive at least $5,000.00 to help with the spring semester tuition. This year’s applicants are law students (of any year) from Temple University and Drexel University. Members of the Section and the Diversity and Inclusion subcommittee will anonymously judge applicants on the following criteria:

    • Which essay most appropriately responds to the prompt provided by the subcommittee. The prompt asks applicants to explain how they would use their life experience to enhance/promote the goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion as an attorney in the Philadelphia Workers’ Compensation community.
    • A letter of recommendation from an undergraduate or law school professor or an employer that indicates the student’s deservingness of the scholarship promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
    • After members select the top five applicants, three of the Section’s co-chairs will render the final judgement by voting on the winner, majority rule. If the co-chairs disagree, the chairs of the Diversity and Inclusion subcommittee will be asked to decide.

Our firm has a staunch commitment to upholding the ideals and tenets of Workers’ Compensation law. In fact, one of the key players in the creation of the Philadelphia Bar Association Workers’ Compensation Section, Martha J. Hampton, was a Partner with our firm before she passed away. We are honored to pledge our support for the Section and the principles put forth by the Diversity and Inclusion subcommittee by donating towards this year’s scholarship.
