  • Galfand Berger Supports Esperanza Immigration Legal Services’ “Celebrating Hope for Immigrants” Event

Galfand Berger was proud to sponsor Esperanza Immigration Legal Services’ (EILS) Celebrating Hope for Immigrants: A Brighter Future event, which took place on May 18, 2023. The event involved focusing on the bright futures of many immigrants that EILS serves, recognizing two pivotal community leaders, enjoying a musical performance, and fundraising to support vital immigration legal services.

EILS is the leading non-profit immigration legal service provider in North Philadelphia. The organization’s primary mission is to empower primarily low-income and Spanish-speaking immigrants through essential immigration legal services.

As part of this year’s Celebrating Hope for Immigrants: A Brighter Future event, the EILS showcased two vital leaders: Amy Eusebio and Jaya Ramji-Nogales. Eusebio is a proud first-generation American, Afro-Latina, and daughter of Dominican immigrants. She joined the City of Philadelphia as Municipal ID Program Director in 2018 and was responsible for launching the PHL City ID. Eusebio is currently the Executive Director of the Office of Immigrant Affairs of Philadelphia. The EILS honored Jaya Ramji-Nogales for her critical leadership and influence in the development and growth of the organization, where she served as a former board member. Ramji-Nogales currently serves as Associate Dean for Research at Temple Law, specializing in immigration law, international law, procedure, and process.

Galfand Berger Senior Partner Michael Malvey currently serves as Chair of the EILS Board of Directors.

Michael has served on the EILS Board for the past decade and is inspired by their tireless work to help give immigrants the opportunity to fulfill their dreams of citizenship. Mike is proficient in Spanish and proudly represents members of the Latino and Hispanic communities throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey. In addition to serving as Chair of the EILS’ Board, Michael also volunteers to sit as an Arbitrator and Judge Pro Tempore for the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, performs pro bono work for the Legal Clinic for the Disabled, and organizes Galfand Berger’s annual food drive, which has donated over two tons of food to local food charity, Philabundance, to date.

EILS’ recent Impact Report shows just how many service milestones it met in 2022:

    • Over 2,000 immigrant clients served
    • Over 3,700 immigrants educated through info sessions and citizenship classes
    • Over 700 legal applications filed with a 98% approval rating
    • Over 200 volunteers engaged, including attorneys, interpreters, and legal interns
