For those of us who enjoy motorized adventures on two wheels, spring is the time when we can finally allow our iron steeds to stretch out.
Before beginning the riding season, take the opportunity to freshen your skills by taking one of Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s “MSF” rider education courses. If you are fortunate enough to be a Pennsylvania resident, the courses are free and are held in locations throughout the state. Basic Rider Course, Basic Rider Course 2 (formerly Experienced Rider Course) and Advanced Rider Course are all available through various locations in Pennsylvania. To register for a course near you, visit Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program (PAMSP).
You can also work on improving your riding skills from the comfort of your armchair by picking up a copy of Proficient Motorcycling by David L. Hough. A motorcycle rider with over 40 years of experience and a well-known motorcycle journalist, David Hough is THE authority on motorcycle safety. His award winning book is the most comprehensive, yet easy to read, treatise on safe-street riding. The realistic, time-tested strategies Hough offers are guaranteed to make you a better, and most importantly, safer rider.
As you get ready to ride your motorcycle after its winter hibernation, take a look at your gear. Do you have the gear that will protect you in the case of a spill? If the answer is No, before the season starts, invest in an armored jacket, pants, motorcycle-specific boots and most importantly, DOT-approved and preferably full-faced, helmet. Make this riding season the one in which you adopt the AGATT (“All Gear All the Time Time”) rule. Go ahead! Twist that right wrist. And, of course, don’t forget to wave if you see us on the road.
