The Workers’ Compensation Section of the Philadelphia Bar Association (PBA) just named Jean Chey as this year’s recipient of the Martha J. Hampton award. The award honors former Galfand Berger partner Martha Hampton, who worked closely alongside Jean when she was an attorney with our firm in the nineties.
Recipients of the Martha J. Hampton award are attorneys or judges who best embody the qualities that Martha typified throughout the scope of her career: professionalism, dedication, and good will. Mitch Golding, a former colleague of Chey’s, spoke fondly of her impact in the legal community. Chey, Golding said, possesses many of the qualities that Martha held dear: being moral and truthful, intelligent, a mentor to fledgling attorneys, and always willing to lend a hand to someone with a legal question. While accepting her award Jean spoke highly of Martha, her own former mentor. Jean said when she first began practicing workers’ compensation law that she did not see a long future ahead. Once she began working with Martha, however, the influence that she would have on Jean’s career was monumental.
Before her passing, Martha was instrumental in having the PBA recognize the Workers’ Compensation committee as its own Section. The Section affords attorneys with the opportunity to learn, enhance their skills, and better serve their surrounding communities. Jean learned much from Martha; during her acceptance speech she reminisced about advice Martha had given her years before. Martha’s advice to Jean was to be mindful of your professional reputation and that the PBA is a small bar, so to treat others as you want them to treat you. Undoubtedly, Jean took Martha’s advice to heart; current and former colleagues alike, as well as professional peers, all speak highly of Jean and her abilities.
The creation of the Martha J. Hampton award was the result of an important goal: to memorialize and honor Martha’s passion, dedication and respect for legal practitioners and the profession at-large. Each year, Galfand Berger makes a charitable donation to Kids Chance on behalf of the Workers’ Compensation Section of the PBA and to celebrate that year’s award recipient. Kids Chance is a not-for-profit organization that helps children and teens that lost a parent from a work-related injury to achieve a higher level of education. Please join us in congratulating Jean Chey on being this year’s recipient of the highly esteemed Martha J. Hampton award!
