Halloween Safety: Keep the Frights Fun
The city of Philadephia

Halloween should be filled with costumes, candy, and fun—not accidents and injuries. With more pedestrians on the streets, dark walkways, elaborate decorations, and Halloween parties, the holiday can also bring increased risks.

At Galfand Berger LLP, we encourage families, drivers, and property owners to take a few simple precautions to keep Halloween safe.

Watch for Trick-or-Treaters

Drivers should slow down in residential neighborhoods and watch carefully for children crossing streets or walking between parked cars. Parents can help by using reflective tape, flashlights, or glow sticks and reminding children to cross at intersections whenever possible.

Pedestrian accidents can cause devastating injuries, including broken bones, head and brain injuries, spinal injuries, and internal injuries.

Prevent Slips, Trips and Falls

Homeowners expecting trick-or-treaters should make sure sidewalks, driveways, steps, and porches are well-lit and free of hazards. Uneven pavement, wet leaves, extension cords, decorations, and poorly lit stairs can all cause serious falls.

Costumes should also fit properly and allow children to see and walk safely.

Be Careful with Decorations and Pets

Battery-operated candles are a safer alternative to open flames, particularly around costumes. Decorations and electrical cords should be secured so they do not create tripping or fire hazards.

Pets should also be kept safely away from trick-or-treaters. Even a normally friendly dog can become frightened or overwhelmed by costumes, strangers, and repeated doorbell ringing.

Celebrate Responsibly

Halloween parties can also mean an increased risk of impaired driving. If you are drinking, arrange for a sober driver or rideshare. All drivers should avoid distractions and remain especially alert for pedestrians.

When an Accident Is Caused by Negligence

Sometimes an injury is more than simply an accident. A negligent driver, dangerous property condition, dog bite, defective product, or other unsafe condition may give an injured person the right to seek compensation.

Since 1947, Galfand Berger LLP has fought for individuals and families injured because of the negligence of others.  Call 800-222-USWA (8792) or complete our online form to schedule a free consultation.
