  • Fatal Series of Crashes on Roosevelt Boulevard

car accident on roosevelt boulevard in philadelphiaOn Friday, a series of collisions along Roosevelt Boulevard left one man dead and another in critical condition. According to Philadelphia Police, two men were involved in separate accidents that left their vehicles disabled in the northbound lanes under the Broad Street overpass.

Officers said when other vehicles began striking the disabled cars, both men leapt over the concrete median into the southbound lanes to avoid being hit but were then struck by a passing Toyota. One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition with multiple injuries.

The Toyota driver was uninjured in the collision, remained at the scene, and is cooperating with investigators, police said. The Philadelphia Police Crash Investigation Division is investigating. A portion of the boulevard was closed and a buildup of snow and ice was noted on the roadway at the time of the incident.

Secondary crashes involving disabled vehicles are among the most dangerous events on high-speed, multi-lane roadways such as Roosevelt Boulevard. When vehicles are stopped in active travel lanes, approaching drivers often have little time to react, especially in low-visibility or congested conditions. Snow and ice can further reduce braking ability and vehicle control, increasing the risk that an initial crash will quickly turn into a chain of additional collisions and serious injuries.
