  • Consumer Product Safety Commission Issues Warning to Labubu Collectors

Philadelphia Products Liability Lawyers at Galfand Berger LLP, Representing Injured Victims Since 1947The Consumer Product Safety Commission, or CPSC, recently issued an urgent warning to Labubu collectors regarding an influx of imitations and knockoffs. The plush dolls have gained immense popularity in the United States as well as abroad in the last year. Labubu’s parent company, Pop Mart, sold millions of units every month for the first half of 2025 – and the sales show no signs of slowing down.

Just like real Labubus, the duplicates, which are sometimes called “Lafufus,” are also made of plush. The knockoffs and imitation dolls, however, create a serious and significant risk of choking and death for children. This is because the duplicates are small enough for a child to fit in their mouth, leading to potential airway blockages. In addition to concerns over their small size, some of the knockoff and imitation dolls also easily break apart, creating many small pieces and, in turn, even more choking hazards.

So far, the CPSC has intercepted and/or identified multiple shipments of knockoff and imitation toys entering the U.S. The agency has also requested the seizure of thousands of units that are in violation of federal standards and regulations for toys containing small parts. According to the CPSC’s Acting Chairman, the fake Labubu toys are “dangerous, illegal, and have no place in American homes.” While the agency continues to employ what it calls an “aggressive enforcement” at American ports to block the import of these dangerous products, it says that consumers can stay vigilant in avoiding knockoffs and imitations by observing the following tips:

    • Know what an authentic Pop Mart Labubu doll looks like: they feature a holographic Pop Mart sticker, a scannable QR code that links to a verifiable Pop Mart website, and, on newer editions, a subtle UV stamp on one of the doll’s feet.
    • Beware of bargains. Steep discounts are sometimes a red flag for fake products.
    • Fakes will often have things like overly bright colors or the wrong number of teeth (for reference, authentic Labubus have nine).
    • Check safety labeling. For any toy that contains small parts, look for choking hazard warnings and independent safety certification marks.
    • Before making a purchase, know your seller. Only make purchases from trusted stores or online marketplaces.

In the meantime, the CPSC’s warning urges consumers to immediately discontinue using all imitation or knockoff Labubus, and/or Lafufus, and to avoid purchasing unauthentic units.

When to File a Products Liability Claim

Every year, defective or unsafe products injure thousands of individuals. Manufacturers, suppliers, and sellers all have a duty to produce or sell products that are safe for consumers to use. Despite having these legal and ethical responsibilities, companies will often disregard their obligations in an effort to secure bigger paychecks. If a product causes an injury that results from an unsafe design, manufacturing defect, malfunction, or the failure to provide proper instructions and/or warnings, the victim may very well have a products liability lawsuit on their hands.

If you or a loved one sustained an injury associated with an imitation or knockoff Labubu or any other kind of dangerous consumer product, someone at our firm can help. To learn more, please contact a representative online now.
