  • Consumer Safety Alert: Playtex Recalls Millions of Products

Philadelphia Product Liability Lawyers detail the Playtex recall on millions of products for children and babies. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recalled over 3.6 million children’s products manufactured by Playtex. The children’s bowls and plates have been recalled because of a defect that creates a dangerous choking hazard.

The products come in a variety of designs and styles; some of the plates and bowls were sold together and others were sold separately. So far, the CPSC received a total 372 consumer reports of the plastic layer attached to the plates and bowls peeling or bubbling. In 11 of those cases, parents or caregivers found the pieces of plastic inside a child’s mouth – and in 4 instances, a child choked on the plastic. Luckily, no one has been seriously injured.

The defect has to do with how the plates and cups were designed by the manufacturer. The plastic layer that keeps the plates and cup’s decorative decals in place easily becomes unsecure – and as we all know, infants, toddlers and young children very quickly become curious and want to put objects in their mouths. Because children are at a higher risk for this type of behavior, both Playtex and the CPSC are aware of how important it is to get these products out of consumer’s hands and homes quickly.

The items were sold in nationwide stores such as Target, Walmart, Babies”R”Us as well as online at Amazon.com between October 2009 and October 2017. They sold for anywhere between $2.50 and $15.00, depending on if they were sold separately or in mealtime sets. Remember – the items come in many different styles and themes, like construction workers, superheroes, princesses, animals and more.

Playtex is complying with the CPSC’s fast track recall process. The CPSC launches fast track recalls when it wants to get dangerous items off of shelves as quickly as possible. Fast track recalls are especially common in the case of defective and dangerous children’s products. If you own any recalled Playtex children’s plates or bowls, please discontinue using them immediately. Consumers are able to contact Playtex in order to receive full financial refunds. If you have any additional questions or concerns about the Playtex recall or product safety, please contact a representative at our firm.
