  • HoMedic Massagers Pose Shock and Burn Hazards: Consumer Recall

Philadelphia Products Liability Lawyers: HoMedic Massagers Pose Shock and Burn Hazards: Consumer RecallHoMedics is complying with a Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recall and is removing many of its massagers from the shelves. The handheld massagers create a risk of electric shock and burns to consumers because of a dangerous design defect. As a result, American consumers have been injured.

More than 400,000 of HoMedic’s handheld massagers are included in the recall. They were sold nationwide between August 2013 and February 2017 at stores such as Macy’s, Bed Bath & Beyond, Walmart, Rite Aid and other major retailers for about $30-$50. The massagers’ power cords are prone to defectively breaking, allowing for the wires to be exposed.

The CPSC reported more than 140 consumer complaints of sparks, smoking, exposed wires and even shooting flames coming out of the massagers. Because they are handheld, the risk of electrical shock or burn to consumer’s hands, torso and face is particularly high. So far, there have been at least 15 consumers who have been injured as a result of the defect. They have suffered burns on their fingers and on other parts of their bodies.

Multiple models of HoMedics massagers were recalled, including the Dual Node Percussion Massager, the Compact Percussion Massager with Heat and the Hot and Cold Massager.

The company is offering consumers a full financial refund and encourages those that own it, to stop using the product immediately. HoMedics has asked consumers to contact them directly, in order to advise them on how to safely remove the cord from the massager.

As the CPSC keeps American consumers up-to-date on product safety and recalls, we will continue to update you with what we know. For now, if you own any recalled HoMedics handheld massager model, please discontinue using it right away, contact HoMedics and call our firm if you have any further questions or concerns.
