  • Philadelphia Product Liability Lawyers Discucss a Product Recall on Toshiba Batteries

Product Recall on Toshiba BatteriesThe United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) released a statement recently recalling all battery packs in Toshiba laptops that were sold between June 2011 and January 2016.  The recall includes multiple Toshiba PC models and upwards of 180,000 computers sold in the United States as well as Canada.

The cause for the recall is that the battery packs can overheat and melt, creating a fire hazard. Not only is this a fire hazard, but also it is potentially dangerous to consumers. Although no injuries have been reported to the CPSC yet, the risk is large enough to warrant a recall of all the defective models.

Toshiba launched a voluntary recall of its defective PCs last January, which was followed up by the CPSC’s international recall. There have been at least five instances reported where the battery packs overheated and melted. The recall was recently expanded and now includes 41 of Toshiba’s Satellite laptops in total. Just this month, Toshiba once again expanded its product recall, calling more than 80,000 more PCs potentially defective for the same reason: overheating and melting battery packs. Toshiba has noted that many models need to be recalled and that for consumers who had a replacement battery issued by the company, or even purchased an extra battery on their own, that it could have been defective as well.

Toshiba has recommended that consumers who test their battery pack and find it is faulty to immediately turn their PC off and remove the battery. The company notes that customers can continue to use their computers by plugging them in to an AC power adapter and wait for a safe, replacement battery to arrive.
