  • Toys to Avoid This Holiday Season

Toys to Avoid This Holiday Season‘Tis the season for gift-giving, but safety experts warn that some gifts have no place under the Christmas tree or Hanukkah menorah this year. According to World Against Toys Causing Harm (W.A.T.C.H.), a global toy safety initiative, a litany of seemingly innocuous toys could cause personal injuries for children in 2016. The list singles out items ranging from an animal-shaped pillow to a sling-shot. Parents should always closely scrutinize the wish-list of small children. By weeding out potentially dangerous gifts, a happier holiday can be had by all.

Products May Cause Choking, Eye Injuries

W.A.T.C.H. maintains that choking hazards continue to present a serious threat to children. The “Peppa Pig Muddy Puddles Family,” available at popular retailers like Target and Wal-Mart, features packaging which states that the toy is intended for children as young as two-years-old. However, the playset includes small pieces which could easily be ingested by a toddler. Similarly, although the “Baby Magic Play and Feed Baby” – available online at Amazon.com as well as in-store at Toys “R” Us – consists primarily of a doll, accessories including a baby bottle and spoon, are small enough to be swallowed. According to W.A.T.C.H., the product is marketed for children as young as three.

Other toys making the list were chosen by W.A.T.C.H. because of their potential to cause eye injuries. The “Nerf Rival Apollo XV-700 Blaster” boasts of an easy-load magazine which facilitates intense competition. On the product packaging, children are depicted with a face mask covering their eyes but the mask is not included, and must be purchased separately. The “Slimeball Slinger” is advertised for children ages six and up. However, according to W.A.T.C.H., the bright green “slimeballs” which are used as ammunition can travel as far as 30 feet and land with such force that a serious eye injury is possible. The complete list of 2016’s most dangerous toys is available on the W.A.T.C.H. website
