Three Galfand Berger Attorneys Take Part in Expungement Clinic

Posted on

On Friday May 26, 2017, Galfand Berger attorneys, Brad Smith, Farhan Ali, and Deenah Kogan took part in an expungement clinic in partnership with the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division, the Mayor’s Office, the District Attorney’s Office, and Community Legal Services.

Brad, Deenah and Farhan represented about ten individuals who were seeking to have prior arrests and/or convictions removed from their record. Having one’s criminal record expunged refers to removing certain offenses from a person’s record. In some cases, certain convictions cannot be expunged, so it remains on their record, but can be sealed from the general public. Many of the individuals they represented were held back from pursuing permanent employment and further education because of their criminal record, some of which offenses dated back years.

Having a record sealed can improve the quality of one’s life as it allows a person more employment options, education and financial aid, and housing that would otherwise not be available to them. Expungement clinics are shown to contribute to a community’s overall health and productivity. They are known to decrease rates of recidivism, or a relapse into criminal behavior.

This is not the first time these attorneys have taken part in pro bono hearings or helped their community. Deenah graduated law school with a Pro Bono Service Hours award, highlighting her commitment to community service and outreach. You can see Deenah’s full bio here. While Farhan was in law school, he took part in the Wills for Heroes program. This program involves creating documents for first responders so in case something happens, their families will be protected and well taken care of. To read more about Farhan, please click here. And, while in law school, Brad participated in the Advanced Family Law clinic and provided pro bono representation to indigent individuals. To see Brad’s full bio, please click here.
