  • Philadelphia Personal Injury Lawyers Contribute to Legal Treatise on Traumatic Brain Injuries

Philadelphia personal injury lawyers, Gabriela Raful and Richard Jurewicz, of Galfand Berger have written chapters for The ABA Medical-Legal Guide: Head Trauma and Brain Injury for Lawyers. This legal treatise goes into detail on the law and intricacies associated with traumatic brain injuries.

Rick Jurewicz penned Chapter 21: “Traumatic Brain Injury — A Plaintiff’s Perspective,” which outlines the laws and potential issues a plaintiff may face during the healing and legal process of a traumatic brain injury. Gabriela Raful wrote Chapter 23: “Traumatic Brain Injury: Social Security Context.” In her chapter, Raful explains how Social Security may play a role in a traumatic brain injury case and how the injury applies in the Social Security context.

A traumatic brain injury disrupts normal brain functions for the victim. These types of injuries come after a significant blow to the head and other cases of head trauma. However, not all head trauma causes brain trauma, which is why the treatise covers both ends of the spectrum.

This new treatise is the fourth book in the ABA Medical-Legal Guide series and gives detailed information regarding how head and brain trauma is treated within legal terms. To give lawyers and other legal personnel a full picture of the issues, the text is broken into five parts. This includes basic medical and legal discussions on head trauma, neurological consequences, neuropsychological evaluation and rehabilitation, injuries and issues from specific causes such as sports, and a look at defense and plaintiff defenses for a head injury.

Traumatic brain injury is a serious health concern that causes permanent disability for a large number of people each year. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that around 1.7 million people are affected by a traumatic brain injury annually.
